PC handhelds also run Xbox Game Pass and similar services natively, which makes them hybrid devices in a way the Switch was never built to be. That's a real point in their favor. Battery life is the real cost, though: PC handhelds are widely noted for limited battery endurance under a gaming load, while phones typically last considerably longer on a single charge. The caveats are real, not cosmetic: quality falls apart on a weak connection, subscription libraries can lose a title mid-playthrough if a licensing deal expires, and there's no offline access for anything cloud-only. A dedicated handheld runs its native library locally: zero latency, guaranteed offline, no subscription needed for anything already bought. Cloud gaming stretches a phone's reach dramatically, and along with that reach comes a pile of dependencies that a Switch or Steam Deck simply doesn't carry.

Mobile owns categories that don't really exist anywhere else. Auto-runners, idle games, match-3 puzzlers, hyper-casual time-killers; none of these have a natural handheld equivalent, because they were built around a thumb on glass, not a joystick in a hand. A dedicated handheld, Switch or Steam Deck, makes sense if you want offline-first play on a catalog someone else already curated, if your taste runs toward long-session RPGs and narrative-heavy action-adventure, and if you don't mind carrying a second device and, in the Steam Deck's case, planning your evening around a battery that taps out in under two hours.
Your phone makes sense if you already carry it everywhere and have zero interest in a second gadget, if your taste leans casual or touch-native or fits into short bursts, and if your connection is solid enough that cloud gaming can stretch your library into console and PC territory without falling apart. Clip a controller onto that phone and it starts covering nearly everything a dedicated handheld does, plus more.
For most people without a specific reason to want a dedicated device's native catalog, a phone with a decent controller and a cloud subscription is a genuinely competitive setup now, better battery life and more portable besides. The bigger number was never the point. Your actual life, your commute, your couch, your patience for a screen that dies at hour two, was always going to decide this before the spec sheet got a vote.
